The great success of modern conservatism (Reagan conservatism, as opposed to say, classic Eisenhower conservatism) is convincing average Joes-- middle class, working class, or worse-- that protecting corporate chieftains from government regulation or intervention is their cause too.
It's no coincidence that the tea party movement originated from a rant by CNBC pundit Rick Santelli on the floor of the Chicago stock market, in which he not only called for the tea parties, but also insisted that those facing foreclosure were "losers". Or that the taxes that the teabaggers were ranting about affect only those making over $250,000 while most of America (including, I'm sure, 98% of the teabaggers) got a tax break from Obama. They've taken corporatism and repackaged it as a populist movement.
blueduck37 has never complained about paying taxes (to my knowledge), or expressed any expectation of a handout. you, on the other hand, proudly ran away from your country so you wouldn't have to support its infrastructure and work to make it a better place, and are skulking in another country freeloading off their socialized system.
Seriously, do you ever read your own conversation threads sometimes and all like, "Whoa, that has nothing to do with the comment above it. What the hell was I thinking about?"
Way to ignore the substance of what I actually wrote.
Not to sound like a conservative, but I won't have my patriotism and my dedication to working hard and the American dream challenged by a guy who's so dumb that he decided to escape America's evil "socialism" by going to Europe, where almost every country has policies and social programs and laws that make America look like Barry Goldwater's wet dream.
I'll also add that I have also always believed that, if you take this type of Rand-ian free-market ideology at its word, that there is nothing wrong with what was done by Madoff, Enron executives, or anyone who helped make the housing bubble possible, etc. But as those things imploded, and the public realized they'd be scammed, conservatives insisted this was not connected to free-market principles and they were horrified and etc. Kind of like the old saying... it's only a crime if you get caught.
Because really... in the end, how was what people did with the sub-prime mortgages, and repackaged and resold mortgage-back-securities, etc, any different than what Madoff did (in terms of economic ethics, not the exact letters and loopholes of the law)?
Despite a few Joe The Plumber types picking up copies of Rand because they feel Obama is a tyrant, I think most Americans right now get why having a system of checks and balances on the market is good for us all. The real anger out there, regardless of these book sales, is to the extent that Obama and Geithner and others have enabled the market's failures with bailouts.
I can respect libertarians when it comes to social issues, but when it comes to economics, I just think they're basically anarchists.
Oh god Ayn Rand. I tried to read a book of hers for an essay contest that came through my high school and I quit because it made me want to stab my eyes out and the resulting essay was deemed "too sarcastic" by my teacher to be sent in.
