WASHINGTON – Public disapproval of President Barack Obama's handling of health care has jumped to 52 percent, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll released hours before he makes his case for overhaul in a prime-time address to Congress.
They want him to step forward, take command, and push a good, solid, actually reformative plan through.
Some of them do. That's the beauty of the moment: if Obama goes for public option, he alienates conservatives, independents, and even some Democrats. If he drops public option, he alienates his base as well. It's not easy to get oneself into position like this. He is very talented politician.
The beauty of it is, SOMETHING will change, and the Republicans as a party won't really be able to take any credit for it (well unless at the last minute they change their minds like they did for Medicare in the 1960s and didn't want to be seen on the wrong side of the fence).
Speaking of pandering: House Republicans ended up voting against nearly 500 billion worth of tax breaks in Feb of this year with a stimulus package. Talented bunch.
