Why thank you Captain Miss-the-point. The issue is we signed on to help the US in something irrelevant to us and we're getting no thanks or benefit for lending support and instead continuing to be treated poorly in relations. There certainly wasn't any public push/popular opinion behind signing on (not to sound unsympathetic but the US hasn't exactly been popular this past decade), it was for diplomacy/improving relations and trade.

Afghanistan was and is a real threat to anyone and everyone, and New Zealand is a whole lot closer than California.
Proximity is irrelevant, the only real reason we'd be a target is our subsequent helping of America.

As for only reason you'd be a target.. you're a western style liberal democracy. Sooner or later, you'd be in the targeting reticule of the nutjob fundamentalists. Did you guys sign an FTA too? We only went to Iraq to get the FTA, and we ended up screwing our farmers and local artists, not to mention hurting the pharmaceutical benefits scheme :( I don't blame the US, I blame the giant douche we had as a PM who seemed willing to do anything to get his photo taken with Bush.
