I kinda want to go to one of those protests with signs saying "God Hates WBC" and start ranting and screaming at them for dooming America. Think I could get a few thousand people to go along with me?
I think that's the response they want, actually. They like to spread the hate around, and if it ever gets physical they sue for infringing their "first amendment rights" and get to pay for a bunch more field trips.
I've heard of some people organizing a Phelps-a-thon, where people pledge to give donations based on how long they're out picketing. It becomes more like a big happy BBQ, with music and dancing, and all the proceeds goes to Gay Awareness groups so that's sure make them angrier than a shouting match ever could.
The other idea I liked was a pirate-themed counter protest. Bunch of folks in pirate costumes with pirate signs shouting "ARRRR" at nothing in particular. It turns the whole thing into a hilarious circus and their hate speech gets drowned out.
It reminds me of Martin Luther King Jr. He did so much more for the civil rights movement with his passive strength than Malcolm X with his anger. Easier said than done, I'm sure, but I admire the heck out of those that can.
I remember there was a white power parade where clowns were dressed up and every time someone shouted "white power!" they'd ask "White flour, you say?!" and they'd just throw flour everywhere.
Reminds me of a zombie walk I went to in Vancouver a couple years ago. Our starting point was on one side of an art museum there, and once we got shuffling/staggering our route took us around the museum before heading into a mall. On the third side of the museum, there was a group of twenty or so Iraq war protesters (this was 2005) that just stared agog at the ~400 people in zombie makeup moaning by. Because of them, the Vancouver police thought we were the war protesters, and that we were marching on the city capitol. One of the organizers talked with them after we got off the tram and explained what we were doing. They ended up giving us a police escort down one of the main drags we used, blocking off a lane of traffic so we could use that lane along with the sidewalk.
I love that last one!

God might hate fags, but silly homophobes sure can't pry their gaze away from boys kissing in the park!
