This is the problem when Lincoln's party now comprises of folk who can neither read, assimilate information that disagrees with their thesis, nor adapt in any way. Some of my American relatives were members of the Republican party for many years; before the volte face of the two parties; and well before the Republicans became the coalition of the Biblical literalists and the insane. They were/are financially conservative, rational, Americans. They let their membership lapse, I believe. In the last election my cousins voted for a Dem for the first time in their lives.
In the 80's the UK's Labour Party, after a catastrophic election defeat went back to the drawing board and came away even more extreme and uncompromising than previously. Though they were a left-wing party, in a moderately-left-of-centre country, they made themselves completely unelectable by this.
As has been said, Histroy repeats itself, but as comedy. The US is a right-of-centre country....however, the Republicans appear to have just fallen off the edge into the ocean.
I wonder if her thought process is clear enough to generate the following theoretical comment:
"I find it interesting that it was back in the 1990s that the Gulf War broke out then under Republican President George Bush. And I'm not blaming this on President Bush II, I just think it is an interesting coincidence."
