Date: 2009-01-05 07:57 pm (UTC)The big problem with most of the global warming data you see is that it makes a faulty assumption that change within, say, the last 20 years is useful and rational. This is completely insane, because the natural temperature cycle of the planet is simply longer period than that. So, to really study global warming, you have to figure out what the real temperature cycle is. So, this study went to find what the temperatures do over a nearly 200 year range.
Short answer: In the early 1800's, temperatures were also increasing steadily, to levels much higher than what we see today. Then, temperatures began dropping steadily over several decades until the early 1900's. At which point they began rising again. It was actually very interesting research, and it changed how I look at climate change reports. Namely, don't believe anybody who provides you with information that's less than a century old.
