I have never doubted the seriousness that opposition from those nations could cause. I have never doubted the malevolence their regimes represent, and how badly their people deeply wish to pull one over on the americans and get the best of us.

I have also never doubted that calling a nation EVIL is a boneheaded and utterly ridiculous move if you ever hope to have any clout while trying to negotiate with them.

Last laugh? Nah... self-fulfilling prophecy.

Revisionist much?

We all knew that Iran and North Korea had nuclear programs before going into Iraq. Meanwhile, Iraq had nothing of the sort. We invaded Iraq.

Regardless of all that, though, we still haven't done anything about Iran or North Korea, so how do you suppose Bush has the last laugh?

I thought so as well.

Just for the record, that other comment came with a wink and a smile, not outright smugness and cockiness.

So you're saying we should have invaded Iran or North Korea then?

Some people think that we should not have invaded anyone.

Is it possible that no one is laughing because people realize that bush went from being a harmless idiot to a dangerous one in the past four years?

Heh, what backtracking?

It did make me wikipedia 'axis of evil', though. I like the derivative 'axis of medieval' as applied to W and the far right.

hun?
What reality is this from? We are still laughing!
We all knew NK and Iran were real threats back then, unlike Iraq.
inspections after inspection, all they came up with were the al-samuds with no warheads and the "drones of death" put together with tuck tape. Remember that? France asking for just 3 more months of inspections so that a reason for invasion could be worked out? And when the administration started realizing there was nothing there, they invaded. It was only 3 years ago. It is still a bit early for revisionism. Wait another decade or until Bush's liver turns to mush so things can be rewritten like it was done for Reagan.

Sadly, it really depends on the day.
Some days he is dictatorial, some days he is just a dumb ass.

Actually, I'd say we aren't laughing anymore; we're scared shitless.

I don't see where the "backtracking" is -- it wasn't the concept people were objecting to, but the language of Bush's statements and the implications for future foreign policy.

my thoughts exactly. It's Israel/lebanon/syria involved. Iran and North Korea?... North Korea can't even bomb Japan. Israel, Lebanon, Syria are doing a bit more damage.

woops... my bad. I concede you a point.

However my main point that the "axis of evil" is neither united nor causing as much stir as other parts of the middle east still stands.

Should be Syria. Lebanon is more or less a client state (in practical terms).

Unlike Iraq, Syria has nothing - NOTHING - of worth within its borders. Practically no natural resources to speak of, no gas, no oil, nothing. If we sanction them, they will shrivel up and die. There is absolutely no need for war with them, and there is even less need to consider them any sort of a threat that can't be dealt with diplomatically.

I've always understood "axis of evil" to imply collaboration. You know, like in WWII?

Date: 2006-07-21 02:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] coolstring.livejournal.com
that's why they use the term. They WANT you to think that all of these countries are meeting, together, and planning hateful actions against you, your family, all of your friends and that hot waitress at the bar down the street!!

Oh, absolutely. I should have been more clear with my answer. I just meant it to be a linguistic refutation of the cartoon.

I'd disagree that Iraq in general was *evil*.
However, if he had called North Korea and Iran a duology of evil, he'd ha' been more right.

I think Bush is at his best when he goes cabana boy and gives the Chancellor of Germany a shoulder rub. That boy is in so far over his head he doesn't know what to do. It's a good thing he is not running this country and all we have to fear is Cheney.

I am not left. They just happen to think like I do about this puppet. I don't even want to impeach Bush, I want him to finish out his term. I want all the blood on that gangs hands.
This is America and you get to say what you please no matter if you don't want the other guy to say what he pleases. Only the right wing can have it that way.

"more backtracking" implies that there has been some backtracking or any backtracking. we've all pretty much been laughing at bush the whole time

you really ought to make sure you actaully have a point before you start sucking your own dick.
