thank goodness you aren't serious....

What part of "A force of armed men crossed to border, attacked a checkpoint, killed 8 solders and kidnapped 2. This after 3 weeks of random rocket attacks on civilians and farms." was Israel asking for?

ummm, nope!

The fighting was triggered when Hizbollah, the guerrilla group which is backed by Syria and Iran and is part of Lebanon's government, seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight in a cross-border raid on northern Israel on July 12.

Hezbollah fighters based in southern Lebanon launch Katyusha rockets across the border with Israel, targeting the town of Shlomi and outposts in the Shebaa Farms area.

In a cross-border raid, guerrillas seize two Israeli soldiers before retreating back into Lebanon, insisting on a prisoner exchange and warning against confrontation. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert describes the capture of the soldiers as "an act of war".

In response Israeli planes bomb Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon and troops cross into southern Lebanon for the first time since the military withdrawal of 2000.

However, the troops encounter heavy resistance - eight are killed and two others are injured during fighting with Hezbollah. Israel calls up reserve troops as it pledges a swift and large-scale response to the Hezbollah attack.

I disagree. Both communities are culpable for this violence. If the Israelis and Islamists (Lebanon, Syria and Iran) around the area really wanted peace, they'd find a way. They clearly don't, so they'll have to fight it out. As far as I'm concerned, you can't blame Israel any more than you can blame the Islamist states. They're both to blame equally.

Why should any of the rest of us be concerned, really?

"We will never leave, even if Lebanon is reduced to scorched earth." (http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?xfile=data/middleeast/2006/July/middleeast_July327.xml&section=middleeast)

Sounds like Hezbollah doesn't give a shit about Lebanon, either.

UN Security Council Resolution 1559 of September 2004, which referred back to Resolution 425, called "upon all remaining foreign forces to withdraw from Lebanon"; "for the disbanding and disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias"; and supported "the extension of the control of the Government of Lebanon over all Lebanese territory".

Syria eventually complied with 1559 and removed its occupying forces. However, the Lebanese government has not disarmed Hezbollah nor has it sent its armed forces to secure southern Lebanon and the border with Israel.

In addition, Hezbollah is actually part of the Lebanese government, which contains two Hezbollah members in the Cabinet. The Lebanese government, therefore, cannot abstain from responsibility for the actions of a part of its own leadership.

20 years too long delayed, justice is coming for Hezbollah. They will be broken. Hezbollah is a fully owned unit of Iranian Revolutionary Guard, they don't make a move without approval from Tehran and Damascus. Both knew of the kidnapping plan ahead of time. Assad is making a dangerous gamble that by causing a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon that he can have an excuse to reinvade the country.

Bashar better reconsider or he'll find himself laying beside the smoking ruins of Hezbollah. Israel will not accept a "UN brokered truce" this time, and his threats against them are laughably unenforceable.

Slaughter?

If there are Lebanese left, then the Israelis aren't slaughtering them. It wouldn't take them 6 days.

It is so easy to say "go get them!" in regard to Hezbollah. I suppose many think that Israel is doing no wrong and, in fact, probably doing the world a favor. However, this is not a war with Lebanon...Hezbollah is a small political faction (it has a very small percentage of seats in the current Parliment) that has had problems with Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights. Israel's response to Hezbollah has been to attack Lebanon. Somehow, I don't think this is just, even if Lebanon supports the position of Hezbollah. This "guilt by association" way of thinking that many have adopted leaves much to be desired. If this is the case, then all that support this reasoning are no better than the terrorist that blame the United States for all that is wrong in the countries they reside. Even if it is american corporations that establish commerce (with the blessings of their government), all of america is blamed for what they deem corruption of their way of life. So, all Lebanese should be punished because one group of terrorist kidnapped two Israeli soldiers? I guess I think that is wrong and Israel should have taken a different route to resolve this conflict...

Of course, I am sure that those that oppose peaceful conflict resolution will be quite vehement in responding to this post...

I think Isreal had to draw a line somewhere to stop the skirmishing. But I think Isreal drew the line and went way overboard. It's an undeclared war right now, and unless I'm being misinformed by the media, Isreal is clearly culpable of overreacting and being barely discriminate in its assault on Lebanon.

Unfortunately, I believe the cartoon is correct. Isreal's overreaction- even obliquely condemmed by Bush, for wonders!- is not going to make them friends.
