Edit
As far as the first cartoon is concerned, I think that the US should take a tougher stance towards Iran. The best way to deal with this menace is to openly aid and support democratic movements inside the country that will take down the regime from the insde. The second cartoon shows that Israel has a right to defend one of its citizens when terrorists are taking hostages. In this case, negotiating may not be the best idea, especially since Hamas would love nothing better than to see Israel lose more than they gain.

Date: 2006-07-02 02:43 am (UTC)1983 - Hezbollah bombs the US Embassy in Beruit (an act of war) killing 63 people. Later that year they bombed US marine barracks in Beruit, killing 220 marines. The US withdrew from Beruit a year later.
1996 - The Khobar Towers in Khobar, Saudi Arabia was bombed by Hezbollah killing 19 US servicemen. Despite a lot of huff from President Clinton about finding and bringing to justice those responsible, we removed our military to the remote Prince Sultan Airbase in the Saudi Desert, where US forced remained until 2003.
2006 - We've captured Iranian soldiers operating in Iraq.
It's well known which country finances and supports Hezbollah. We have a lot of reasons to take threats from Iran seriously. The question is, do they have any reason to take threats from us seriously?

Date: 2006-07-02 02:56 am (UTC)You have deceptively failed to address the context of these attacks.
1979-- The US was supporting the dictatorial Shah. What do you think happens in a revolution?
1983-- The US was openly supporting the sectarian Gemayel government against other sectarian interests in a volatile and violent warzone that Israel had left for US troops to risk their lives taking care of.
I'm unaware of the last one. Where did you read that?

Date: 2006-07-02 02:13 am (UTC)The second one is just stupid. Maybe if instead of going after the cub, the lion went after a bunch of humans in the other direction, that would make more sense considering Israel's nonsensical approach to the kidnapping.

Date: 2006-07-02 02:45 am (UTC)So if you were Israel, and you had the elected Hamas government kidnapping your soldiers and killing your citizens, what would you do? How do you negotiate with people who's starting point is that you should all die?

Date: 2006-07-02 02:51 am (UTC)Considering that Hamas' ideology is otherwise so unacceptable, it is really embarassing and sickening that they are more acceptable and rational than American and Israeli policies with regards to Palestine.

Date: 2006-07-02 02:17 am (UTC)(1) They really have no idea what is going on in the world, but they think they do
(2) They really don't care what is going on in the world, but intentionally frame it this way because it supports their extremist and otherwise illogical and unpopular views
Why? Because their cartoons don't analyze facts, they make facts.

Date: 2006-07-02 02:48 am (UTC)The Israelis are imagining kidnapping and rockets fired into Israel from Gaza?
These are all made up facts?

Date: 2006-07-02 01:40 pm (UTC)I actually find the male lion cub situation ironic since it's usually the males who are most likely to kill the cubs.

Date: 2006-07-02 07:25 pm (UTC)I rarely agree with C&F, but I hope Bluetooth keeps posting them because of the negative reaction. Conflict (when done in a calm objective fashion) leads to resolution, which is something we should all want. It's too bad people get too emotional about these things for honest and productive discourse.
As for Israel and Palestine, I say our interests there are dangerous to Americans, as are all our interests in the mid-east. The Israelis are one ethnic group that comes from a bunch of tribes that have been fighting over that scrap of earth for thousands of years. As long as both sides base their position on ancient ethnic beefs and religious mandates, then they are both screwed.
