sort of undecided on this one. could have killed him, tons of people have been executed for doing worse than this scum. furthermore, prison isn't what he used to be, and he won't get roughed up by any cellmates.
on the other hand, rotting away with no coverage and living his life in a boring, despicable way seems to suit him well.
it's almost the ultimate punishment for someone who enjoys being important as much as he clearly does.
In 5 years, no one will remember except a few who followed the case. In 10, he'll be in history books and only people who care about 9/11 will care. In 20, he'll still be in history books, in law schools as a case, and only professors will know. In 40, no one will care beyond looking at the case in a law school.
There's no way America can stop al Qaeda from accomplishing their goal. Dr. Abdullah Azzam, a founder of al Qaeda, wrote in their charter that al Qaeda is to be "the pioneering vanguard of the Islamic movements". They attacked very specific targets to inspire other fundamentalist groups and to draw western powers into a fight. They intended to be the head of the spear in the fight against the west, not the killing blow. Imprison or kill as many al Qaeda members as you want, they've already accomplished their goal.
If we want to stop fighting terrorist groups we should pull out of the mid-east, and stop using Africa and the Pacific rim as our personal play ground.
I'm just looking at madmethod's proposed solution, and I'm like, "how does this solve anything?" That's my question. Cutting and running presents a horrible image to image-based societies.
I don't propose we "cut and run", a term conservatives seem to use whenever it's suggested that merely being there is part of the problem. I'm suggesting that as long as we continue treating poor countries like shit, desperate people there will fight against us. It took decades to build our influence there, and it may take decades more to get out. But I've heard no suggestions from our President or any conservatives that involve LESS presence in the mid-east.
