I find there is this growing set of people younger than me whose affinities and concerns are increasingly alien to me, but not unfamiliar. I recall being out of touch with older people at many earlier points in my life.
I know what you mean, but I feel like I've been better able to adapt to other evolving standards of humor better than I've been able to find humor in SNL. (I've never actually found SNL to be amusing, even when I was younger.) I even get more contemporary humor trends better than the humor trends I grew up with. (For example, surreal positive humor (current) vs. discomfort-based humor (5-10 years ago) vs. the gross-out humor that seemed to be everywhere when I was younger.) It seems the best way to describe it is as a inexplicably self-sustaining place to weed out mediocre talents like Kenan Thompson from people who might have some star potential, like Kristen Wiig; but even there it seems less and less successful, recently "launching" Bill Hader into what strikes me as an unpromising solo career.
