In middle school, we had a particularly abrasive English teacher and on the last day, asked us all to write a paragraph summing up what we were taking away from her classes. One joker handed in a single-line saying "You ain't learned me nuthin!"

Again, HOTS is a type of teaching style. The inclusion was not based on some sort of actual opposition to thinking skills, but rather curriculum/teaching options that are not geared toward educating appropriately.

All children should be taught informal logic (concentrating on fallacies) and introductory ethics. Then, when they're ready for algebra, they should be taught formal logic and and ethics education continued.
