Its so easy to get worked up about the stuff that is less likely to happen, because realistically there is nothing you are expected to do to avoid it. With the things in the above pic, you have to make a choice not to die from them, that involves actual work and sacrifice. God forbid we have to give something up!

I do think you hit the nail on the head there, though.. about stuff we can't prevent or avoid and that's why it's scarier. Flu? I can get a flu shot, and I do. Diet and weight? Well, I could do something about that too... I still have some control.

I keep telling myself these kinds of things over and over, but I'm still worried. :(

The whole debacle has me laughing straight to hell, this just made the humor better.

Bring on the new plague!

Interesting spike in that first bar for "motor vehicle accidents"!

Yeah - I was surprised that the spike wasn't younger. The other spikes surprised me too - Most death seems to happen at an age when you expect folks to start to die. It makes sense though. You have to die of something. Seems silly that we shame people and stress them out for dying at a normal age. The comic seems mean and petty when you look at it in that light.

Well, it is a bit petty to shame people for dying of "obesity" when the statistic is based on secondary effects, e.g. If you get fat you increase your risk of heart disease. The petty part is, you also increase your risk of heart disease by GROWING OLD.

And either obesity is caused by genetic factors or addictive factors and is not a choice, in which case fuck this comic very much, or it is a matter of choice, which clearly and thoroughly sets it apart from ebola and other infectious diseases.

Or it is a combination - You have a body that predisposes you to obesity and you have to work three times as hard as a normal person to keep from being obese. But some folks manage to do it.

Growing old increases your chance of dying. I've never been sure why people consider it "avoidable".

Right? You'd think that there would be a huge spike in shaming and finger pointing for gun violence as a truly preventable death since the spikes happen well before the average life span is over.
