When I eliminate your job with automation, make you surplus, make you obsolete...what do you think is going to happen to you? When there are no jobs for you to have, because robots and software make you irrelevant, what do you think you're going to do?
Start a neo-luddite crazy totalitarian sect of course! ;) sarcasm-mode - off. I do not think customs clearance and brockerage is going to be automated in the next 50 years, first of all because due to legal limitations this job entails goods classification decisions that have to be made by a legally capable human being, who can be held accountable. And anyhow - it would be my own problem, I do not believe that I have any moral right to leech on you or anyone else.
So, people in industries that aren't "forever," when they lose their jobs, and want yours, what then?
You sound like a Thatcher. "There is no society, there are only individuals and families." Of course, without society, whither respect for the authority of the state, its borders, and customs?
You don't even see how irrelevant and unimportant you, personally, are. Not your job. You.
Exactly - no one should be forced to give a fuck about me.
"You sound like a Thatcher. "There is no society, there are only individuals and families." Of course, without society, whither respect for the authority of the state, its borders, and customs?"
I would not agree with Lady Margaret - there is society, but it is necessarily your or mine friend. It cares about its own survival and expansion, not about a well-being of every single particle inside it.
Well, I don't actually quite subscribe to a "selfish gene" (selfish meme?) model of society, nor do concede any moral point to such a society. That way lies fascism.
I do agree that society is not quite so obligated to every single human life within it that we must bend over backwards for everyone. On the other hand, society is comprised of persons, in whose eyes society must be seen as strong and/or just (and preferably both) for society to survive.
If the technologies and practices of a given era create widespread unemployment, the society of that era is going to seem laughably unjust when it insists that employment is the requirement of survival.
What we should do is kick back and relax and let the software and robots take care of everything.
But because a certain class of assholes thinks they deserve to own the software and robots, we'll have to slaughter that class of people, then kick back.

So you're in favor of throwing out copyrights, patents, and property law. Don't think that's going to work, hoss.
I'm certainly in favor of limiting them, at least to the extent they were originally limited. And it will happen, sooner or later, one way or another. "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."
