Your Dad appears to be talking about Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty" in the sixties. It was the beginning of the meltdown of urban African-American families. The Welfare system was set up to favor families without a father, and thus began the exodus of African-American males from the family. It was and is a stupid system. Welfare should be available to whole families who need it, not just to single parents
That's a curious place to start the meltdown. I don't everything was hunky dory before Johnson, ya feel me?
Meltdown wasn't the right word. It was more of an exacerbation of problems that already existed. But even with poverty and bigotry, rural black families did manage to sustain their familial groups after slavery. It was black families in the inner cities that began to break up the way welfare was set up. It shouldn't have just been for single parents; it should have been for whole families who were struggling,
There was some breakup of AA families before that....for 400 years. Through slavery, yes, but that wasn't the case for rural black families after slavery. They formed strong families. It was the black families in urban areas that suffered from the way the welfare system was set up. Most of them originally came from rural families that stuck together. For the family to get help, the father had to leave. That's why Welfare is so fucked up.
Only it doesn't work if you don't believe in Jesus, like me, and if the idea of an American Theocracy founded by right-wing religious fundamentalists terrifies you, again like me.
And some of us who believe in Jesus, but believe completely different things ABOUT him than the right-wing religious fundamentalist nut jobs do are just as terrified as you are, believe me!
