Journalist: Indiscriminate Bombing of Civilians by Iraqi Gov’t Has Helped ISIS Recruit Supporters (http://www.democracynow.org/2014/9/3/journalist_indiscriminate_bombing_of_civilians_by)
I did a double-take when I saw "Iraqi Gov't" in there--had to click on it just to convince myself that it wasn't really meant to say "U.S. Gov't." And I must say, it's kind of refreshing (in a twisted sort of way) to see the fingers being pointed at somebody else for a change.
And yes, I know my country has done plenty of other heinous things over there--more than plenty--but I feel guilty enough already, so please humor me just this once.
The idea is to provoke a reaction, which will then provide the evidence of what the west is doing, which will encourage people to join the fight. They don't want sympathy from foreigners, they want soldiers.
Right, this. We live in an era of spectacular terrorism; it's the show that gets the recruits. I'm not quite sure how you fight back against it.
While it might prompt some eye-rolls to suggest it, I think you can draw an interesting parallel with the kind of grandstanding that has come to typify Tea Party politics in the U.S. Rand Paul's and Ted Cruz's antics are nothing if not just high-profile events that are designed to make them look more powerful and influential than they really are. A product, perhaps, not so much of insanity but of our information-saturated media environment, where the only messages that seem to have any salience are the ones that punch their ways through.
