The Jews outlasted the Babylonians, kicked out the Selucids and kicked out the Romans - once - when the Romans came back we weren't so lucky. I think at that point however there were more Jews in the rest of the Roman Empire than there were in Judea.
The Nazis didn't occupy Palestine in ww2. The British did. They and the Arabs don't have the best history with the Jews during that period though.
The Nazis were not cruel to Jews in Palestine, true, I suppose, but there was still some antipathy. After WWII, I just think it was felt that it was the time and opportunity to let the Jews have their own state and determine their own fate.
The UN didn't really give it to them, the UN set up a partitioned jewish state inside of Palestine so the Arabs and the jewish immigrants wouldn't keep murdering each other. It wasn't until a year later that the Jews declared the entire area to be Israel. The UN didn't have anything to do with that. And the UN didn't give the Jews the area, it was mostly from illegal immigration.
The British were actively trying to prevent Jewish settlers trying to get to Palestine (the area was under British control at the time), and that's the opening scene in the movie "Exodus (http://youtu.be/ySvaWWYGbq0)," which details a lot of the circumstances for Israel declaring its independence. The music in the OP's video is from Exodus' soundtrack.
I've never seen the movie, but I read Leon Uris' book, which was superb. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get past the hubris about the early days of Israel.
Yeah, I'm glad someone else has read it, and liked it.
I've seen it mentioned on LJ that Uris' novel was prompted by an Israeli PR firm to get American support for Israel boosted. That meme has been debunked.
The movie was great too. Here's the opening scene where the British were actively detaining Jewish immigrants from Palestine. (Sorry I thought I had embedded this earlier)
