The New Republic has a nice article on what people, the kids, are trying to leave behind - the lords of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Beer and the new rich of the drug gangs: "Guatemalans Aren't Just Fleeing Gangs" by Saul Elbein

Actually, some people might regard what they are trying to leave as a libertarian paradise and a gun utopia.

I've been wanting to see this, but everytime I reach for it in my queue I'm not sure I can stand the heartbreak. So, I watch some meaningless drivel where things blow up and the good guy wins. Maybe I'll start watching those sorts of movies instead of reading the news. It will leave me in the same state of mind anyway.

Oh Dr. Gene, you charming and totally not-racist rascal, you.

Also, I think Europe would probably say they have a bit of a border/immigration crisis, pretty much anywhere with food does.

And what if they are? Are the youth who want to escape the gangs who cut of their fingers? If they are, I think there's a good chance that we might be able to turn them around. Maybe there's some hope.

Get some laser tat remover to donate services and see how many takers there are. Seriously.

I'm so old and tired.

As I understand it, the folks with computer skills (like programmers and engineers - not just support) are some of the people complaining the loudest about immigration right now. Their salaries are being lowballed so that medium to large companies can sponsor immigrants who will work for half what they used to command.

I don't have the data to back that up, just loads of comments I've read on techie type message forums. Just a trend I've noticed. It might be blather, but it's a lot of different comments in a lot of different environments. It makes me glad that I don't work for some massive corporation. There's absolutely no job security unless you are upper echelon.

I'm not surprised. Tech was at a premium then. Even Eastern European techs could demand and get a high wage if they were good.

Guatemala had several rounds of ethnic cleansings in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which were horrific. The military junta leader at that time, Efrain Rios Montt, was recently put on trial and found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity.

While I sympathize with people all over the WORLD who are living in dire conditions, in America we are facing a crumbling education system, have done little to no work on helping our homeless population, and are continuously battling legislation that will shit on those fighting poverty as well. As we cannot (will not) address our own issues, I do not feel that we are capable, (or that it is our duty) to succor additional populations.

As a generally liberal democrat, I'd love to help and see the need for help, but as a realistic human, I also understand that just because hands are out that doesn't mean that we have anything to put in them.

At the same time, it's not like the problems down south happened without us at all.

Bingo. Believe it or not, the biggest impact we've had is the direct result of farm subsidies. We grow too much corn because we are encouraging farmers to grow too much corn. The excess that would collapse the corn market is then shipped all over the world as "food aid," even to places that had a drought years ago but are fine now.

Ah, but what farmer in his or her right mind would grow food when free food is being supplied? The price collapse of corn south of the border drives the multi-generational corn farmers north to look for work.

Personally, I think people near the top know this, and persist in the subsidies simply to provide the country with cheap labor. A constant source of said labor is key to keeping the labor unions here quiet and toothless.

I'm with you on this I think. On the one hand, I feel really, really awful for what those kids are facing in their home countries; but on the other... I mean, we can't just keep letting tons of people into the country unabated when we have our own issues we need to be taking care of.

There's really no good way for this border crisis to end. :(

I agree. I don't think there is a good way for this to end at all. :(

Tax cuts not paid for? Tell me more.

You don't have to "pay for" tax cuts, because they don't consist of "spending" anything.

That's the step I know. I'm still trying to figure out the whole conflation between that simplifying conceptualization and the argument that, in terms of deficits and budget policy, we don't have to worry about deficit-increasing tax cuts as much as deficit-increasing spending.

Even if they did approve that $3.7b in funds, I'd be upset that they weren't going to OUR education system.

I don't think this article is rasing a relevant question. The questions that the countries who face illegal immigrations of various undesirables should ask IMO is whether they can afford their influx on both monetary and cultural forms.

Just go to Miami airport and see how long it will take you to find English speaking/understanding person.
If only one can put all this things in one chain of not necessarily directly connected events: illegals->failed overpriced healthcare->failing education->low minimum wages->amount of liberal voting people ->crafts fake cheese production-> 7-30 million illegals in US. I do understand that this amount of poor educated with bad health people have nothing to do with our economic crisis, but they don’t make it better either.
I do understand those who vote liberal, they want better conditions no matter for who, for Americans or whoever already live here, but do they understand that funds amount didn’t change, it just amount of people has increased? I guess it is time to change laws and policies, and 3.7 billion it is just a temporary fix.
