The second one is more accurate than the first. While I applaud the Dream Act, Obama's administration has been just as deportation happy as any previous, and in fact he's been advocating to make deportations easier and faster.
The system does not have enough flexibility for this kind of influx, and aside from a few liberal circles, I don't think there is much political 'win' here to do anything but to make those kids disappear as fast as they can.
That's ridiculous. Manifest Destiny: not only from East to West, but from North to South! We don't even have to change the name: the United States of America.
The problem is that Texas won it's independence from Mexico, and was a Republic before becoming part of the U.S. (same with California). Kinda like Mexico won it's independence from Spain (hence Cinco De Mayo). I Suppose we could give back Arizona, and All of New Mexico, except for the part we actually paid for.
Just for the record, this "children crisis" isn't about Mexico. The vast majoprity are coming from further south.
REPUBLICANS SO ANGUISHED ABOUT BORDER CHILDREN, THEY WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THEY DO NOTHING ABOUT IT (http://wonkette.com/553798/republicans-so-anguished-about-border-children-they-will-not-stop-until-they-do-nothing-about-it#eojtzMWW4yb1JaKg.99)
Maybe he should freak the Republicans out and say, if they don't give him the money, he's just going to give them all amnesty and make them citizens, complete with photo-ID voter card. :)
To no one's shock: Boehner: No 'blank check' for border crisis (http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/211855-boehner-no-blank-check-for-obama-on-border)
He then said something about the House needing to do something unspecified and blamed the President for having been President for 5 1/2 years and not addressing it. Never mind that Congress is supposed to write legislation. Obama's very existence appears to prevent that from occurring so clearly it's his fault.
Too many of those people believe they were sent to Congress to literally do nothing - that obstructionism is achieving their goals of stopping government growth. Never mind the problems it causes.
It's jaw-dropping, especially coming from the House where they won't bring the Immigration Bill from LAST SUMMER to the floor for a vote because it would pass.
Meanwhile, we're paying for the 8th Benghazi investigation.
See, but it's all the Democrats' fault. The GOP would be happy to pass the legislation piecemeal - starting with everything they want to do - and then they can dither about all the parts they don't want to do.
Serious question: Why aren't the church groups that were grabbing up all the children (who had relatives!) after the earthquake in Haiti scarfing on all of these children? Where are all the organizations that were all over Romania after the fall of Communism, dragging children out of orphanages? Seriously. Where are all these groups that had so many slots for these kids that they were willing to practically kidnap the kids from Haiti after the earthquake?
I don't know much about the situation, so maybe I'm wrong, but this seems like the perfect situation for them to swoop in and actually do something excellent for a change.
That's a good question. I wonder if it could be that the law would not permit it, possibly on the grounds that it would only encourage more kids to come over illegally, but that's a complete, wild guess.
I don't know the situation either, but if they go back across the border, surely they could allow the groups to go back over with them and pick them up as sponsors. It could be a win-win.
It's my understanding that these kids are escaping the narco wars? I can't even begin to imagine what they've been through already. They seriously need help.
That's good. I'm genuinely glad to hear it. I'm glad that people are getting involved.
I looked it up, just in case you are interested. Mexico is part of the Hague protection of children act. They'd have to be foster parents rather than adopt, so most of the groups who took part in the child rescue in Haiti wouldn't be interested.
The bare minimum would be to take care of these kids as best as we can for as long as we can. They've been through a lot just to have the chance of getting here (like the 13-year-old girl who was forced into prostitution by a drug cartel before escaping again). I mean, damn. Not doing that kind of thing is what got Sodom into so much trouble.
By what moral logic should there be a Central American exception?
There is no logic. Just a quirk of the law — a 2008 law intended to deter sex trafficking. It mandates that Central American kids receive temporary relocation, extensive assistance and elaborate immigration/deportation proceedings, which many simply evade.
This leniency was designed for a small number of sex-trafficked youth. It was never intended for today's mass migration aimed at establishing a family foothold in America.
Stopping this wave is not complicated. A serious president would go to Congress tomorrow proposing a change in the law, simply mandating that Central American kids get the same treatment as Mexican kids, i.e., be subject to immediate repatriation.
Then do so under the most humane conditions. Buses with every amenity. Kids accompanied by nurses and social workers and interpreters and everything they need on board. But going home.
One thing is certain. When the first convoys begin rolling from town to town across Central America, the influx will stop.
