I've spoken with this guy from Zimbabwe, and according to him the corruption is a bit deeper than that. By the time to aid gets to the needy people they put on all the adverts, most of the supplies are rotten, half empty, etc. So basically, everyone from the top down, skims a little bit off the top for themselves, as this aid makes it down the pipeline. They aren't forced to account for where the money is being spent, and how much actually ends up to help those needy. Nonetheless, it's a shitty cartoon.
All sending money does is prop up corruptive officials over the people that need the money.
I don't think throwing money for aid at Africa is going to do anything in the long term. That's a hand out, and hand outs don't work for ending poverty if anything it makes the problem persist. It's not gonna give them jobs, or farms where they can support themselves. Especially considering what you said. I think whatever food, money & supplies go there needs much more oversight and security. I read an article that said many Africans were puzzled at how a few concerts can help them, they want farms & jobs, not Celine Dion or Bob Geldof being all preachy and stuff.
FYI: I saw that your in London, I hope all your friends & family are ok.
i just hate all these idiot muscians who wont' even admit that it's a complex issue. i mean, who doesn't want poverty gone, they don't even understand what there is to disagree about. and you're right, I've spoken to these people, and they're desperate for jobs. and why should they get so many accolades..oh, you took one night out of your life and sang a few songs, and got all that publicity, kudos!
thanks, I'm a bit freaked out, since one of blasts happened a few blocks down from my flat. everyone I know is fine, I just think my mom had a heart attack when she couldn't get through to me right away (the phone networks were given over to emergency services).
Some people just have an overly simplistic view of how the world works. These multi-millionare entertainers sit in their palatial estates and watch the world through kind of a skewed perspective. They are so used to everyone (usually the entertainment media and other suck up types) hinging on their every word that they start to actually believe their own hype.
If people like Bob Geldof or U2 want to help in Africa, perhaps they should start a recording studio there, give some Africans some freaking jobs so they can have a income that can sustain them. Africa doesn't have to become a huge capitalist or industrialized nation, but some industry & capitalism sure wouldn't hurt them anymore than they are hurting now I think. Long term solutions in Africa in regards to hunger and poverty will have to be done by Africans, for Africans.
I heard that the phone system was jammed up bad, I know some people here who have friends / relatives in the UK and getting in touch yesterday was nearly impossible. I imagine people there will be a bit nervous there for awhile.
The only question mark in my head is if these terrorist cowards are starting an ongoing campaign there or of it was just an isolated group of militants that gave their best one two punch and now they are fleeing back to wherever they came from. I kind of hope they were suicide bombers, that way they are dead and burning in hell (if there is one I'm sure thats where they are)
Even though there are corrupt leaders in Africa today, much of Africas debt is left over from colonialist periods--debt forced on these nations by the countries robbing them of their natural resources. Yes, money borrowed by these leaders ends up lining their pockets, but then they put undue pressure on the people of the country to pay the debt back. Just forgive the debt and let them work it out themselves from now on. If there is no more money to be given, then the other countries in the world have cleared their conscious and the African countries will have to really work things out.
The leaders of third world countries usually are not the ones who need aid. The people, regardless of how corrupt their leaders are, need help and we should offer it in a way that allows the money/resources to reach those in need. Period.
The cartoon might've made a point if he had said something out of line and extreme like "the West deserves all of the blame" or "most of the blame" and not the fairly reasonable "a large portion of the blame".
