They should be this, but what they shouldn't be are places that confuse this kind of intellectual engagement for a kind of credulous agnosticism about the world that prevents anyone from reaching any conclusions about what the "truth" is or what an appropriate moral evaluation of a person's character might be. Or, I suppose as you would have it, to remain open only to conservative points of view.
We can reach actual conclusions about the second Iraq war. Nothing fizzyland has said about it is false or even contradicts your usual talking points on this issue. So it seems puzzling for you to grouse about the intellectual environment of colleges here, unless what you mean to do is to advocate precisely that kind of credulous agnosticism that's at the core of modern conservative thought.
It should not really be all that surprising that, in an open, democratic society like our own, every once in a while some political figures might become pariahs after stepping down from public office. I'll bet there are plenty of withdrawn commencement speeches in Obama's future, for example, and I am sure you will be at the front of the line defending them as the result of vigorous free speech.
