The phrase "no sense of humor" comes to mind. Using historical figures as a point of reference for modern issues. C'mon, Ben Franklin being ostracized for his energy ties, or the wreckless environmental practices of George Washington. That should induce at least modest chuckle, even for the most hardened of liberal bleeding hearts.

I thought the delivery of the joke was alright. I don't know if the "newsguy" is an actor or not, but it's as good as any shit SNL has done in recent years.

It's more of a statement of mediocrity. I grew up during the first incarnation of SNL when they had Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dan Akroyd, John Belushi, etc...but my favorite cast was in the early 80's with Joe Piscopo, Eddie Murphy, Tim Kazurinski, and that crew. They've been average ever since, with a few glistening gems of chuckle inducing cast members like Mike Myers, Chris Farley, and Dennis Miller.

At least with this little tv ad, I laughed a little. With SNL now, I have found myself literally groaning because it's some really unfunny shit!

It's just not clever. The use of historical figures for modern day issues happens all the time. At first I thought this was a parody because it was just so incredibly stupid and garish, but when I decided that it was real, well... it's depressing. And I'm not a democrat or a republican, since you feel compelled to label.

I noticed you put libertarianism in your interest list. I gave up on the Libertarian thing a while ago. Too many liberals. Y'all got some nice stands on the issues, but you range the gammut of left wing extremes to right wing extremes. From the Republican who wants to smoke dope, to the Democrat who is anti-war, but likes tax cuts. At least with Democrats and Republicans, you have a better grasp of where the candidates stand, instead being all over the political map. You can't get your candidates elected to any significant level of government, and from my personal experience just cry because your candidates have no political traction. You'd hate it if Kerry was in office, yet hate it when Bush is in office. You're outside the political fence looking in on what everybody else is doing.

But that's just my opinion :)

The "Moderate Middle" or they are a "Staunch Moderate". Or maybe they don't want any political ideologies because they have some internal need to rebel against something. The kind of people that take their ball home when they don't get their way.

I'm proud to say I'm a Conservative Republican, and even though I don't support everything the administration does, I don't see myself voting for some wacky Third Party candidate, who will ultimately give the other guy more votes, therefore putting the other guys in charge. If by some chance it is McCain vs Hillary in 2008...even though I'm not a big McCain supporter, I'd vote for him because I would hate to see the alternative in office.

Fourth, I don't know shit aboot running for office. My friends have insinuated that I should...but dude, I've got more than a few skeletons :) I could just see some of the fucks here supplying my posts to the opposition party. That would get ugly!! hehe You could ask my (real life and LJ) friend dlmorgoth, he ran for Congress here in Kansas City back in 2000 as a Libertarian. He would know more aboot the process than I do.

All but one of my friends say i just use common sense...the other fucker calls me a liberal, but we all know hes just an idiot. I like the middle, it allows more leeway on unrelated topics (such as being pro-choice and pro death penalty)

I'm not forming an opinion of you specifically. I have some good friends who claim the Libertarian title, and all of them combined cover pretty much the whole political spectrum. Given the vast difference in the Libertarian mindset, there are subgenres of the "left" and the "right" within that party.

For the sake of conversation, Libertarianism IMHO boils down to this: "I pay taxes for the government to protect me from other countries, and they should mind their own fucking business."

Personally? I'm not a pot smoker. I have never actually tried it. But if it's not bothering anyone, let them do it. Crack? Let them do it. It's their lives. Their bodies. Let them. As soon as you start telling people how to live, that's when I get annoyed. And that happens to be something that both republicans and democrats are good at doing. Telling people how to live. /Especially/ the republicans. God, the fucking republicans.

The idea behind those historical figures in particular is that they are generally regarded to be above reproach in American History. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin are widely recognizable for the good they did in our country's fledgling years.

I say all that just to say that I see their point. I am a Democrat by choice for lack of a party that better expresses my views, but the ad rings true.

That's exactly the point. I suppose if we used more modern figures in the 20th century, the ad could have substituted Democrat Party heroes like FDR, Truman, or JFK, and use the examples of Democrats being opposed to FDR due to his overseeing of international warmongering. Truman could be portrayed as a mass murderer of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians. And JFK could be construed as a rich elitest who gave tax cuts to the rich.
