I've got an ongoing conversation with a friend who is convinced that Snowden had absolutely zero new information. He's been able to link to articles from mainstream news organisations that mention pretty much everything Snowden has released. It's quite interesting that this is only a thing now, even though we've known about elements of it since 2003, most of it since 2007 and all of it since 2010. Again, mainstream news like BBC and stuff, so it's not been ignored by the media, just the people, until there was a bad guy/hero to give it a narrative.
"In the aftermath of the Watergate Scandal, a congressional hearing led by Sen. Frank Church revealed that the NSA, in collaboration with Britain’s SIGINT intelligence agency Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), had routinely intercepted the international communications of prominent anti-Vietnam war leaders such as Jane Fonda and Dr. Benjamin Spock. Following the resignation of President Richard Nixon, there were several investigations of suspected misuse of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and NSA facilities. Senator Frank Church uncovered previously unknown activity, such as a CIA plot (ordered by the administration of President John F. Kennedy) to assassinate Fidel Castro. The investigation also uncovered NSA's wiretaps on targeted American citizens. After the Church Committee hearings, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 was passed into law. This was designed to limit the practice of mass surveillance in the United States."
It isn't wiretapping, and all of it has been done within legal bounds, at least under this administration. To answer the valid part of your question, I do not have an issue with the anonymous collection of metadata. I worked in the telecom industry for a long time. The government has always had access to your information *with a warrant*. They still need a warrant to connect metadata to a particular person or to trace anyone's whereabouts using their phone. I should say they need a warrant to use any information gathered that way in court. Technically, all that information is available at the switch of your wireless carrier. Just as all your email is available at Google, if you use gmail. If Google or Verizon want to give up the information to the NSA, you can't do a damned thing, but for the NSA to use it in court, our constitution would have to go up in smoke.
BULL FUCKING SHIT, DUDE. EVERYTHING YOU SAID IS PURE BULLSHIT. But it's good to see what the talking points for the apologists are. Thanks for that, anyway.
It's bullshit? Query for you: What law prevents me as a telecommunications corporation from making a deal with the government to give them all the data that passes through me. Hmmm? Your only option is to not use me. Kind of tough if I'm Verizon or AT&T.
Not according to him. His "mission" is "accomplished". (http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/edward-snowden-after-months-of-nsa-revelations-says-his-missions-accomplished/2013/12/23/49fc36de-6c1c-11e3-a523-fe73f0ff6b8d_story.html)
do you know what metadata is? do you know what a wiretap is? because it sure sounds like you don't. It's nice to see the right wingbats and the left wingbats agree on something, even if it is out of complete ignorance.
You were warned of this back in the late 1990s. You didn't listen then. You want it not to happen now? Ban all modern computing and go back to dial-up.
