Now granted I was not watching TV in '65, but man I really don't remember any "flap" . The biggest deal I remember was Dylan going electric, and that was earlier in the year. Don't misunderstand, I believe you, but it seems to it must have been mountains out of mole hills, I mean "White Christmas" referred to SNOW for pete's sake...

(oh and Mr Banks isn't for you, but for the idea that people would think it "odd" for a black person to sing about snow)
