- lesson was given to his daughter at a private religious school in Florida
- said private religious school is supposedly accredited
- remember folk, if it's accredited, that means it's legit

From the poster himself: Back story:My wife and I were both raised in very religious homes and have moved to a more liberal stance in adulthood. We live in an area with extremely sub standard schools so we opted for private school. When selecting a private school we interviewed many and chose one that had a reputation for academic excellence and we figured that any doctrine could be countered at home with open discussion. My daughter (3rd Grade) has been at this school since Kindergarten and things have been going well. Most doctrinal issues were handled delicately without fundamentalism and allowed parents the option to discuss differences of opinion with their children. This week she brings this monstrosity home. I am livid! So my question to Reddit is am I being hypocritical by putting my child in this environement and then being shocked by the outcome? Or should I have a straightforward conversation her teacher and move on?

Yes, you are being hypocritical. You get what you pay for.

I don't think they are being hypocritical: Catholics believe in science. Plenty religions have no problem teaching science

Mine taught macro-evolution. They also taught exorcisms were real things.

Yep. My school was hard core science. Taught by lay people. Religion was taught by priest and nuns. The distinction was very clear to everyone.

At least they believe in gravity. I wonder how
the school does on evolution.

If the Sun's gravity disappeared, Earth would depart orbit at a speed of 105,000 km/h (65,000 mph).

If the Earth's gravity disappeared, surface objects such as me would be flung off at a speed of 1,670 km/h (1,040 mph).

If you don't want those things to happen, you need to get rid of angular momentum at the same time as gravity.

I think the "you get what you paid for" only applies to certain religious institutions. For example, an older girl that I looked up graduated as the last class from a single sex Catholic school. She then went on to become a veterinarian which is obviously an 8 year program heavy in science. I don't know what her exact schooling was like pre college but I doubt that she would have made it into a competitive science based program believing that God makes sure we all stick to the world. My parents did have concerns about sending me there since I was also interested in science but by the time I was of age, the school was closing.
When I read about this person's experience what stands out is that they interviewed the schools and chose one based on academic performance. His daughter has been there for at least 3 years without a problem until now. I think the parents should at least bring it up with the principal as soon as possible and express their concerns because they are right, this will not help her later in life even if she chooses to enter the clergy. Who knows, maybe this is a newer teacher who just thinks this is how things are done because it is a religious school.

Gravity causes wind too! Indirectly.

Yeah, I thought of that too.

Funny thing is, gravity is something we observe and yet don't have a well-established explanation for. It's an acceleration. It's normal, but different from those other things we call forces. It's a bit of a mystery.

But saying, "God created it, just like everything else," doesn't explain how different gravity is, or make the speaker special. It's a scientifically empty statement.

I'm pleased to see you post this!

Wild stuff, gravity. God's arms hugging us is as good as most explanations. Keep asking "why" for a few degrees and the kids will hit black holes.

Holy Crap! A church has embraced The Onion's Theory of Intelligent Falling (http://www.theonion.com/articles/evangelical-scientists-refute-gravity-with-new-int,1778/)! Snark becomes dogma!

To be fair, 4(d) is actually correct. It's just that people who do</> believe in God can't explain it either.

Is it wrong that I'm more offended by question 2? Without gravity we'd be pulled into outer space? What, exactly, would be doing the pulling, hm?

This is the problem with private schools. Concerned parents just pull their kids out of the public system rather than demanding the public system gets fixed.
