I don't know about "they" or "them" making it, and it's not a gay thing, but: "santorum" is the frothy mix of feces and lube that sometimes results from anal sex. That's what the word means.

The fact that there's a "serious" Republican who open claims that his really real name is "Richard Santorum", which is to say "Penis Sexpoop", is just another sign that Republicans don't understand modern culture, have no critical thinking skills, and are easily fooled by Sasha Baren Cohen.
