I am a little bewildered though that you think me saying "Hey, this is a personal hangup I have and it's completely irrational" is actually MORE self-righteous than saying "People just ARE this way it's just FACT." Why is that?

This is about judging someone you don't know by what they are wearing or what kind of car they drive. I'm not sure you're helping your case by saying, "well since there are right-wing assholes out there, it makes it ok for me to be an asshole."

Oh wow, dude, if having personal hangups about things and owning up to them as personal hangups writes someone off as a worthless asshole, then pretty much everybody's assholes. Except saints like you who just state FACTS amirite? :)
Someday perhaps I'll get over my twitchiness around BMWs. I mean, my scar's healed up nicely, my son's grown up to be quite healthy, and my PTSD's subsided to the point where I'm considering starting to drive again soon. So maybe someday I won't be an asshole! Or maybe you'll find some other tiny personal hangup to which I openly admit and use it as an excuse to write me off across the board. Either way, maybe you'll find peace by way of a brownie and learn to live in a world in which everyone except you is assholes.

Either don't look down on people who judge others for whatever reason or don't judge others yourself. I've had certain groups of people attack me physically as well as my property numerous times. But if I treated everyone who looked like these individuals differently, that would make me a massive hypocrite. One or the other, that's all I'm saying.

See, I could see a point there if I'd said something like "I will never date anyone who drives a BMW" or "Everyone who drives a BMW is an asshole, it's just a fact" or something. But I honestly don't see how "I'm the wrong person to ask what's wrong with BMWs because I have personal hangups about them" is this self-righteous racism-equivalent thing you're making it out to be.
That and, honestly, I think that while everyone stereotypes, there's something to be said for not only examining and acknowledging them, and being willing to change them in the face of new evidence, but also for the idea that maybe some stereotypes are more rational than others. Stereotyping based on personal choices - "people who choose to buy BMWs also tend to wear white ball caps backwards" at least involves comparing apples to apples, personality facets to personality facets. Now, any and all stereotypes should be brought into the light of day, and questioned and re-evaluated when new data is introduced, but at least stereotypes of behaviors based on other behaviors may have some possible utility.

It's possible to do something and then regret it when more information comes to light, though. It's a reasonable person who can change their opinions in light of changing facts.
BTW, I'm only fiscally right-wing. I'm a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, anti-war, pro drug legalization, privacy-advocating constitutionalist.
