Sadly, I don't see his replacement being any better. The selection process is designed specifically to keep progress from seeping into the Vatican, each Pope (if he lasts long enough) appoints his successor. This is why the Vatican is still stuck in the 5th Century while the rest of the world, and even many of the priests and nuns outside the Vatican, have moved into the twenty-first.
