Local Sales taxes (in my area this is 7%) You pay sales taxes on firearms.
Federal/State taxes which could be anywhere from 10-25% per pack (and in some states higher) Tha would mean only a certain class of people would be able to afford a firearm, even though the Second guarantees the right to private firearm ownership to all. One could make an argument against this on socio-economic equity grounds (unless one accepts that poor folk just do not deserve to defend themselves in an emergency, hunt, target shoot, etc...)
The rule at most cigarette selling distributors is if the person looks under 27, they need to be carded, EVERY time, it is very rare that I am not carded, at 26 years of age. You cannot buy firearms from retailers without a background check and a valid state ID. EVERY time.
CONSTANT regular checks and balances by federal agencies that make sure the 18+ laws are being enforced What makes you think this doesn't happen with firearms? How often do you think gun retailers risk their licenses and their freedom by playing fast and loose with gun laws?
MASSIVE lawsuits awarded when a seller has been found at fault for death, injuries or other complications resulting from smoking (which in turn results in even MORE laws and regulations against tobacco manufacturers so that the same thing doesn't happen again) As telemann says below, a Federal law passed in 2005 called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act prevents that at the current time. Funny thing about those lawsuits against the tobacco industry: people are still smoking.
We are no longer allowed to smoke in public arenas, and in most places have to stand 20ft away from a buildings entrance, regardless of how the venue chooses to run it's business Interesting. I agree that's a huge over-reaction and an even larger abuse of the police power. We should get rid of those laws.
If a person of age is found guilty of buying cigarettes for minors, heavy fines are imposed and in some states charges can be filed See above. Why do you think this isn't the case for firearms retailers?
