This. I can't remember if it was from the actual text, but I remember reading somewhere (back when my parents made me go to church, etc.) that as a curse for tempting the humans, the "serpent" lost his legs and was forced to slither on the ground.

Some of my Christian friends used to argue that it was a dragon, and that's why we don't have dragons anymore. Because they got turned into snakes.

if I remember my years of bible-learning right, it was always a snake, but snakes had limbs at the time. All snakes lost their limbs as punishment for doing what that snake did forcing them to always have to crawl on their bellies.

So technically humans got off easy, and original snake sin is the real deal!
