I think it's a lot less heartbreaking to avoid shellfish and clothing made of mixed fibers than it is to never have sexual and romantic relations with a consenting adult you are sexually and romantically attracted to.

That's true, but why not tackle those first steps to avoiding sin before moving onto to other steps that cause drastic losses of self-esteem and bring about suicidal tendencies? IT'S JUST COMMON SENSE.
That doesn't follow. What was Adam and Eve's choice was to sin originally, thus opening up the possibility of further sinning on the part of their descendents.
While I agree with your stance, the 'pork and shellfish' argument doesn't hold water with Christians: according to the Bible Jesus said something along the lines of "what you put into your body doesn't make you unclean, what comes from your body is unclean," essentially overruling the ban on 'unclean' animals.
