This is both hilarious and frightening.

It's also one more reason why, despite my deep-rooted hatred for guns, I still want to learn how to use them.

I do not fear their slightly-larger army of hoverounds. I've been to Walmart, I know what conservatives look and move like.

Sadly, conservatives/teapartiers also look like the soldier with extensive special forces training or the militia member with a stockpile of automatic weapons who drills in the woods with his militia buddies every weekend waiting for RAHOWA. They do have a majority of the guns, because their obsession with guns borders on the religious and they are scared to death of the black helicopters, and they have no reservations about blowing away liberals and minorities.

Even a few teapartiers in the right places could be disastrous. A coup doesn't need the whole military, just enough people with the right positions. From what I've heard, the officer corps is more conservative than the enlisted ranks. Officers are the ones who usually initiate/lead coups. It's a legitimate concern.

You can only shoot one gun at a time. When they finally rise up, we can distribute their arms each time we smash a nest.

This.

It's like I always say: You don't need to maintain a stockpile of weapons and supplies. You just need to know which of your neighbors do.

Hoverounds, guns, and a vaguely alive malevolent force that wants to destroy anything that isn't rabidly right wing?

Are we talking Republicans from Sun City Arizona or Daleks?

look out there's one coming though!

They're just waiting for an event, anything they can blow out of proportion to give themselves justification, then they'll start it up. What scares me far more than whiny little idiots like Breitbart is the large part of the military who shares his beliefs. They're far more dangerous than some teabagger blogger sitting in his parents' basement.

"large part of the military"

Not gonna happen. Here's an example of why:

Just me and some liberal friends, hangin' out doin' liberal stuff. (Well, one of them is sort of conservative... but we don't judge.)

Most of these guys are also veterans.

(Someone needs to make a movie called Blue Dawn, about a ragtag band of libertarian leftists fighting a guerrilla war against a Christo-fascist dictatorship. They could yell, "Honey Badgers!" Honey badger don't give a shit.)

I never said that there were no liberals with guns, I simply said that conservatives have the MAJORITY of guns. For every ragtag group of armed liberals like you and your friends, there are many more groups of conservatives out there doing target practice and paramilitary drills waiting for RAHOWA. I'm sure there will be some resistance from liberals, since some liberals have guns, but I doubt it'd be sufficient to overwhelm the much larger numbers of crazy teabaggers invading the cities with their guns.

From: [identity profile] madscience.livejournal.com
I don't think that's true at all. Like I said, it's really only the soft, pink center-left that hates and fears guns. I'm discovering that they're a tiny minority. And also, conservatives may have guns, but liberals have guns and brains. All these Teabagger twits who think they're going to fight some kind of Red Dawn-style guerrilla war are going to get rolled. Liberals are more likely to be thinking more along the lines of an Al Qaeda-style insurgency, more likely to have actually studied 4GW, and are therefore much more likely to be effective.

From: [identity profile] udoswald.livejournal.com
I didn't say anyone "hates and fears guns", I don't hate and fear guns. In fact I've shot guns many times. I don't own any though. If you were to look at gun registration records, and cross reference political beliefs, I think you'd conservatives own more of them. It doesn't take brains to go to a political rally and open fire, that was proven in Arizona. Do you think the average Al Queda grunt, shooting up religious gatherings or blowing up US Army convoys, has any brains to speak of? You don't need strategy to start a campaign of quick, bloody slaughters.

Date: 2011-09-25 07:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madscience.livejournal.com
That's true. But quick, bloody slaughters do not a successful revolution make.

Date: 2011-09-25 08:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madscience.livejournal.com
...and the Al-Qaeda grunts blowing up convoys are disposable meatsacks, just like our own grunts. But there's somebody behind them with brains and a strategy. A Teabagger revolution wouldn't have that.

Terrorism, as Guevara astutely noted, is essentially an admission of defeat. It's strategically counter-productive. The only chance it has to succeed in any way is if people exaggerate and misinterpret its significance, as many did with 9/11, and as pinks continue to do with the shooting in Tucson. People's fearful reaction, born of their own stupidity, causes far more harm than the attack itself.

From: [identity profile] udoswald.livejournal.com
There are most definitely "brains" behind the tea party revolution. They run the various think tanks that provide the guidance and funding for the tea party groups. The teabaggers would like to pretend they're completely independent but their strings are being pulled by many of the same people who used to work for George W. Bush.

Terrorism, as Guevara astutely noted, is essentially an admission of defeat.

I think deep down the teabaggers realize they've been defeated in the war of ideas. The 20th Century was one progressive victory after another (women's rights, civil rights for African Americans, labor laws, abortion rights, etc...) and the 21st Century has already seen advances in many areas that teabaggers oppose (gay rights for instance). They can win an election or two but they're in their last throes and they know it.

The only way they're going to rule this country when the children of today grow up is if they make elections irrelevant and the only way they're going to do that is through some sort of violence. They're most likely going to wait until after the next election, since they think they will win the Presidency and be able to accomplish some of their goals through the government (for instance, their stated goal to have a Constitutional Convention where they can remove many of the protections currently enshrined in the Constitution and put reform out of reach for generations regardless of public opinion). However, if they lose this election I'd be ready for them to decide more extreme measures are necessary. They're not the types to go home and admit defeat.

From: [identity profile] madscience.livejournal.com
I don't think the billionaires who are the "brains" behind the Tea Party could organize and direct a violent revolution the way they organized and directed the Tea Party's political shenanigans. I don't think that's their area of expertise. Although maybe they could hire Xe. Or just bug the local police commissioner for another brutal crackdown on any protest against their totalitarian rule.

The teabaggers have already failed politically and been cut loose by their puppeteers. You might be correct that when they realize this, some of them may turn violent. But it will be limited to isolated incidents of no real significance, like the massacre in Tucson. On their own, the Tea Party could never organize anything approaching an effective revolution.

Why not split into a few entities? There could be like 5 regions, each its own country, ranging for socialist to minarchist.

There are times when that feels like (http://www.fuckthesouth.com/) a good idea to lefties like me. But I doubt that even that would satisfy (http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2005/02/resentment-tribe-other-day-i.html) the folks whom we currently call the Tea Party.

Also likely are the socialists destroying their own region, as is their wont, and then spreading out to destroy other regions. See: California.

Only five? I'm hoping for at least seven, not including independent Alaska and Hawaii.

I would split the west coast, dividing mid California, lumping norther Cal with Oregon and Washington. Southern Cal would take Nevada, southern Arizona and New Mexico. Utah and Northern Arizona would become Morman land. The plains states would likely be separate from the Midwest, which in turn would be separate from the North East. Denver (following Boulder's lead), I hope, would become it's own nation state, but that is because I am a fan of Shadowrun. And then, of course, there is the new Confederate States of America.

Trying to nations on political grounds tends to not go smoothly.

Northern Ireland was created to recognise that some people wanted a united Ireland (mostly in the South) and some people wanted to stay with the UK (mostly in the North).

Doesn't tend to satisfy the minority of people's whose opinions aren't reflected by where you've drawn the boundaries and who are not inclined to move (to be fair... why should they? If we all started immigrating every time another nation has politics more to our liking then there would be a hell of a lot more immigration going on).
