Context: Prime Minister Harper recently made it a firing offence for anyone employed by the federal government to refer to it as the "Government of Canada". The correct terminology is now the "Harper Government".

Also, Mayor Ford of Toronto, a populist demagogue, has threatened to sic "Ford Nation" on Premier McGuinty in this fall's Ontario election if McGuinty doesn't give Ford lots of free money. Ford was elected after criticizing the previous mayor for asking the province for money. The coinage is a parallel on "Leafs Nation", a collective name for supporters of Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team.

Is anyone surprised by either of these?

Rob Ford only got in based on populist slogans instead of an actual substantive platform. "We're going to stop the gravy train!" Woo, yeah, privatizing housing for poor people is really gonna help. This is just an extension of that.

As for the GoC... I honestly have no idea WHY they did this but I'm not surprised. Maybe PM Harper is counting his majority vote chickens before the election?

It seems like a bad idea to me. Easy to make an occupation-oriented resistance against the "Harper government" occupying the Canadian government.

Want Harper out of office so very much.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure it'll happen if we get the threatened election.

I'm pretty sure it won't. The Libs are disorganized and the party's a mess, the Greens can't seem to get off the floor, the NDP are as always being the comedy option because Layton has his foot in his mouth half the time... In this political climate the cons come off looking good not by virtue of being a better option, but because nobody else has their shit together.

...no...they don't look good at all, but I do agree I am not sure anyone else has it together enough to bump them.

I actually think Layton runs a decent ship, but his recent health problems will really get in the way of them making any decent showing, and they have no hope at forming a government even at the best of times, and yeah, the Libs are kind of in a mess right now.

wow

and I mean wow because he's going about it the wrong way

because, *ahem*, everyone knows that if you name a government after you self you don't go for a bland "Harper Government"

it has to sound good and derivative like one of the following:

Harpertopia

Harpersepolis

Harpalexandria

Harperistan

Harpensgrad

Harperia

or maybe just good ol Republic of Harper
