And kids should get their own damn health insurance!

it's funny because kids can go out and get their own health insurance with the money they make babysitting and mowing lawns.

it's funny because poor parents would rather buy their kids expensive toys, video games, and candy instead of getting them health insurance.

This looks fun:

It's funny because the strict parent's childs earn his food, shelter, education, and insurance by working in a coal mine.

I don't know you well enough to judge if you were being cheeky or serious, but I've heard this line before, so let me ask: I'd love to know what parents are buying their kids expensive toys and video games and candy to the tune of the insurance prices listed on this hand-out we were just given out at work today (the prices on the right are COBRA rates for those that were laid off this week):

Actually, my parents and I have been looking at my health insurance options and it turns out that I still can't afford ANY of them. Or that the ones I can afford won't cover my medications and vaccines for work. Ironically the medication in question is birth control and while they deny it they also count pregnancy as "illness" and can refuse to cover me based on that too.

Holy shit, it's almost as if the current system wasn't working for well adjusted people with jobs and everything...

You could probably afford to if you stopped paying for luxuries like candy, toys, and video games, OBV. That's what's causing all of the problems.

Irony from the Onion or no, greedy arrogant conservative elitist asswipes have been saying this to "the poor" for uh, well, about 500 years actually, and wha'dya know, things are SO MUCH better now and no one goes without anything and everyone has SO MUCH MORE respect for themselves.

Except y'know, fucking NOT.

Actually, I think it's strictly the Onion's parody character of a right-wing blowhard editorials, made out to be deliberately obnoxious and obsessed with right-wing cliches. Think The Colbert Report, in print form.

The fact that the wingnut OP took the 'comic' seriously and posted it here is pretty hilarious.

The so-called satirical quality of this Onion comic has always stricken me as slightly surreal. I know quite a few people who actually would agree with the "cartoonist's" sentiments. As, apparently, [livejournal.com profile] lather2002 has.

I suppose the converse would be like if I drew a comic about a democrat saying "I know, let's raise taxes on the rich in order to provide more social services!" and expecting people to "get" the joke.

Actually, Vygotskian theory would suggest that if you put the child outside his zone of proximal development (which a child paying for their own health insurance surely is) the child would most likely flounder, become discouraged, and drop out all together, not become well adjusted.

But I think you missed the joke.
