I say people were predicting a second great depression and 25% unemployment before the stimulus.

I say that a) Team Obama was honest from the beginning that this was a deep recession and that recovery would take a year or two in a realistic scenario, and b) many liberal economists like Paul Krugman were saying that even that assessment was too rosy and that, in addition to nationalizing the zombie banks rather than propping them up, a bigger stimulus was needed at the outset, rather than the watered-down version that Obama passed after his wasted compromising with Republicans.

I also say that the real economic problems we face-- outsourcing and corporate tax loopholes that rip Americans off in the name of the 'free market', a consumer-oriented economy instead a production-based one, stagnant wages and lack of job security, no health-care, etc-- are not ones that have been tackled yet, and I fear they will not be. But that is a separate issue.

Except that Biden admitted that the adminsitration misread the economic problems.

Correct. That doesn't contradict what I wrote, but rather just backs up that the point I made in (b).

What VP Biden was saying was that the Obama team was, despite their dire warnings about the deep recession, was too optimistic in their initial assessments of the problems they inherited.

No it contradicts a) that Team Obama was honest from the beginning that this is a deep recession.

It does not contradict anything.

Reread what I wrote-
I say that a) Team Obama was honest from the beginning that this was a deep recession and that recovery would take a year or two in a realistic scenario, and b) many liberal economists like Paul Krugman were saying that even that assessment was too rosy and that, in addition to nationalizing the zombie banks rather than propping them up, a bigger stimulus was needed at the outset, rather than the watered-down version that Obama passed after his wasted compromising with Republicans.

The Biden quote definitely proves point (b) correct. And it does not contradict (a) because the Obama team was honest that this is a deep recession that will take years to heal.... but they are now realizing that the problem they inherited is actually even deeper than they realized. That's not dishonesty by any definition.

Echoing others' sentiments, we'd probably be able to grow something if other people hadn't been pouring salt on the soil for the past oh, 25 years or so.

I say that the the failure of first stimulus was that it was too small by at least 50%, and we need another one.
