In the '90s, when Clinton was President, conservative politicians and pundits were defenders of civil liberties and hated war and wanted government held accountable. In the last eight years, when George W. Bush was President, conservative pundits and politicians decided civil liberties were for pussies and that we needed tons of wars and that the government was awesome and didn't owe you nothing! Now, as the Obama era begins, they are... very very confused. They're back to liking civil liberties and hating government secrets, but they still love war. They'll figure it out eventually.

I'm reminded of this Daily Show segment from a year ago (http://politics4geekz.blogspot.com/2008/04/weekend-video-theatre-fair-and-balanced.html). Worth watching again.

I particularly like the part where they hate government secrets, but only if they're known about. Secret secrets are good, but public secrets are not good because it makes them look bad.

I'm impressed at how things went from "oh god don't release those torture documents" to "fine you released the documents whatever we're mad but RELEASE MORE TORTURE DOCUMENTS"

It's less that I find their reasoning unsound as much as they suddenly value their own vindication over protecting national security (by revealing whatever knowledge they gained that, until now, was apparently too important to make public).

After months/years of arguing that it would be dangerous to talk about what they found out, no matter how much it would vindicate them, now it's not dangerous to have it released.
