Because there's a difference between not supporting something and actively working against it. If a gay marriage bill passed Congress, Obama wouldn't veto it.

Obama should be condemned for not supporting it. But there are levels of degrees, and you fight your worst enemies first.

I don't recall the President and Vice President saying they are against gay people getting married. I do recall the President saying that he doesn't support having specific religions become obligated to allow gay marriages within their religious denominations (which I agree on), but he does support granting gay couples all the legal rights that straight couples who are married currently have (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73oZ_pe1MZ8).

Since my view on gay marriage is requiring everyone to get civil unions and completely castrating any actual legal benefit religious marriages can provide (aka: you can get a Christian/Islamic/Jewish/Wiccan (lol) marriage if you want and if that religious institution permits it, but until you get a civil union it doesn't legally mean a thing), I'm comfortable with his stance.
