I predict that within three weeks they'll be laying the failures of the Iraq War on Obama as well.

This is like a guy who tortches his filthy tenement for the money and then blames the firefighters, right?

Debt is a necessary result of recessions: SEE '80-'82, '91, '00-'02, '08-'10
For years, '82-'90, '92-'99, '03-'07, debt accumulation was not necessary.

But ideologues don't comprehend this.

Funny how they represent the division between the Obama and Bush administration with a horizontal rather than vertical line, like all of the others.

Even funnier how Obama gets the "Debt Star" when Bush handed him the most drastic spike in debt since WWII, as indicated by the jump in the red line at the end of Bush's tenure and before Obama took office.

It is my position, since I first learned of the Obama budget, that the astronomical deficit in 2009 of $1.7 billion, I can live with, except for the fact that I don't understand the TARP bailout stuff and from what I do understand, I do not like it. And I can live with a $1 trillion deficit in 2010. But, by 2011, shit should be down to $500 billion. And by 2013, it should be down to $0.

This continuing with massive debts after 2010 is unacceptable. I hope we all pressure the Obama Administration into changing their policy to get these future deficits down much lower than what the administration is projecting, once 2011 arrives and we are clear of this recession, hopefully.

I agree with the others, something representing Dubya and Reagan need to be up there as well.

Then again, they don't have any catchy symbols, do they?

why? Obama is the president now, not bush or reagan. I love how anytime there is bad news about a dem we have to point out how the republicans did it too. Is that the best you can do. Sounds pretty childish to me.

People around here tend to forget that their favorite political party is just as bad as the "other guys." Hence I try to jog their memories. I've done so for a while now, often the other way around. Why complain about it now?

Politics aside

I find it kind of a shame that this issue always turns into political finger pointing (and yes, even the cartoon at the start does it), because there's an actual serious issue here, and both parties are guilty.

If the Republicans are actually serious about it now (unlike Bush), it'd be a good thing. Borrowing trillions of dollars a year is not the way to create a healthy economy.

Amazing how the conservatives found religion once they realized that we'd be racking up debt to pay for things like healthcare, infrastructure, and education instead of Cold War-era weapons systems and preventing women from getting abortions.

Barack Obama invented government debt! OmG!

I'm no fan of debt either, but debt spending during a crisis is sometimes a necessary short-term evil on the way back to long-term growth (see what FDR did during the Depression and WWII, for instance).

Of course, one way to ensure that a lot of this new spending isn't debt-financed is to raise taxes on the wealthiest brackets (and ending all the corporate loopholes which take away revenue, etc etc), which-- except for returning rates to year 2000 levels-- seems to be deemed politically untenable. Our political culture makes debt spending and creation inevitable.

Too bad Obama hasn't tried lowering taxes and his sole plan for saving the economy. Cutting taxes is what kept W's budgets balanced and reduced our debt.
