Actually asthma is a reason for not being allowed to serve. When I was in bootcamp, we had a recruit discharged for that reason. Sure, we can clog up our lungs with cigarette smoke and kill our guts with coffee and alcohol, but when you can't breathe that's not a good thing to have when you're in combat.
I was even hospitalized during Desert Storm because my breathing was severely inhibited. Some sort of nasty bronchial asthmatic gurgly infection. Lots of bed rest, lots of meds, and lots of VHS movies in the back room of the tent :)
Oh totally, I know - the reason my parents met is 'cuz my Dad's family had to move to Florida or his asthma might've killed him. At least, based on the way the doctors thought back in the late 50s. Asthma *kills* people, it's awful and I'm glad there are ways to stop that from happening. I'm just saying this particular... um... wiener... got out of the draft partly from "asthma" and he's shown in most pictures with a gigantic CIGAR and a giant ring of fat arrogant SMOKE around his head. PLEASE!!!
His tie looks like Sonic the Hedgehog barfed in my kids' Lego box, and I can't stand pretty much all of the "fine cigars," so his taste in those two fields means precisely squat to me.
Kinda like just about everything that comes out of his mouth.
