What's wrong with Geithner? He's been a key to the execution of monetary policy (all FOMC decisions are executed through the New York Fed), and he has impeccable credentials.
I'm sorry but you don't just "forget" to pay your income taxes. I think someone appointed to office should be held to a high standard, and when our secretary of treasury can't even pay his taxes? come on.
Really? Did you pay your social security taxes last year? Are you sure?
Did your employer pay their half of your social security taxes last year? Are you sure? Look at your paychecks and your W2? Is it there? No. It isn't. You don't see thier half of it. None of us do. Now, tell me. Are you sure they paid it? If they didn't, did you know that you are responsible for paying it yourself. So, let me ask again, are you really, really sure?
That's my understanding of what happened to Geitner. When he worked for the IMF, it turned out that they did not pay their half of his SS taxes. I'm not sure why they don't. But I can understand how this can be invisible to him.
Now, here's where he's actually ethically guilty: This ommision was pointed out to him and he paid his back taxes EXCEPT for the two years that were beyond the IRS's statute of limitations. Now the RIGHT and 100% ETHICAL thing to do would have been for him pay all that at the time. But I personally would probably have chosen to keep the money, too. I mean, it's beyond the statue of limitations. Nobody can make me pay it. It would be very hard for me to live up to those standards in that situation. But, hey, that's just me. Maybe you are different.
I'll give him a pass on this one. I think he'll do a good job.
Um, no it wasn't. His employer was the IMF. Not the same thing. Turns out that the IMF doesn't pay SSI taxes directly to the US government -- possibly because, you know, THEY'RE NOT A US COMPANY. Instead, they pay it to the employee, and the employee sends it on.
It was a mistake. He paid it back, and it was the OBAMA team that found the mistake in the first place.
Standard nomination process from either side: "Holy Hell, this guy's the Antichrist!!" - media echoes sentiment - American populace wonders how their representatives could have nominated such a loser - Antichrist gets nominated anyway - Congress tells media they think he's a pretty cool guy. I will never in my life figure it out.
Didn't he also employ an illegal alien? And isn't he the one responsible for the screwed up TARP where the feds aren't letting anyone know how the money is being used?
I thought that the feds (under Bush) weren't demanding that the companies taking the TARP money disclosed what they were spending it on, and therefore they weren't telling anybody.
Good thing Obama is fixing that!
As for the illegal alien, that's the first I've heard about that. Link please?
Whether it was an "innocent mistake" (incompetence considering the position being offered to him), or "purposeful avoidance" (concerns of trustworthiness/corruption), makes not much difference. Either scenario cannot help but bring out serious objective reasons not to give him this particular job.
