I don't really see this as such a huge issue, what exactly is "cultural decay" anyway? It's not like we have a larger proportion of idiots than we have in the past or anything.

"cultural decay" = Whites assimilating black culture. It's seen as decay because everything whites have ever created is good and everything blacks have ever created is bad. Therefore white culture can only be tainted by taking elements of black culture. Never mind that people of African descent have been contributing culturally since before this country was founded.

For the last 20 or so years, it's somehow become this annual creepy meme to use MLK's birthday as a rhetorical cover to mask mainstream society's subjective, resentment-tinged rantings toward what are, ultimately, stereotypical, hyper-distorted caricatures of contemporary Afro-American pop culture.

Said creepy meme usually manifests in using "Coulda! Woulda! Shoulda!" theory to pose the thesis: MLK Would Be Ashamed of Black America Were He Alive Today™.

Basically, this cartoon got in on the annual schadenfreude a few days early.

I don't think I could say it better than softside did, but I do need to add a couple of my opinions to the mix. I suck and trying to get my point across, but I am going to try.

I think a good portion of what MLK tried to do, got done. Black Americans (gods I hate trying to be politically correct, please excuse me) now have equal rights within our country. They can and do vote, get a good education, and as we all know, they can also become President.

I do not think this is a true issue of cultural decay, I think this sets firmly on the ground of Urban decay and better yet, American Decay. I used to hate myself for thinking I was racist because I couldn't stand what I thought was typical black behavior. I was disgusted with myself when I would shrug and say "When was the last time Garth Brooks gunned down Randy Travis?"

I now live in a foreign country and I live around ALOT of Black American and Black Germans. The 'typical' black stereo type is wrong, it is the typical black American stereo type. Black Germans do not resemble your stereotypical Black American. All soldiers look identical in their uniforms, and act the same. Once they uniform comes off, you start seeing the stereo type again.

My point...

After around 400 years of having their identities stolen and beaten out of them, the Black American has tried to find his or her own out of a country that was, until MLK, all white. Really, Black Americans cannot catch a break...they act 'black' they get put down and called gangsters and the cause of cultural decay. If they go to college, get a degree, and become a success, the are accused of acting 'white'.

So, instead of saying this is a race issuue, or that this is a color issue, let's call it what it really is. An American Issue. Until we as a country can fix our minds on seeing what is in a person we are not going anywhere. This goes for both sides of this issue too.

I would like to think that MLK would be proud of the advances in equality in our country, but I also think he would strive to educate both sides on how to find your identity and not go to extremes.

When was the last time white people shot each other? It happens so much that its hard to say.

MLK would be appalled, but not about "black culture". His entire movement was based on advancing the cause of minority equality under God. He tied his belief in God strongly with the movement, and in fact became very disillusioned with the movement when members of his inner circle of friends tried to remove the Christian element.

So, do you think a man who lived his life with virtue and tried to be a Christian leader who led by example would be pleased with the state of America today? I'm guessing not. We still have a long way to go. He wouldn't care about the dress and the mannerisms, but I'd guess he'd be mighty worried about the children out of wedlock, the lack of Christian charity and the breakdown of the family in the communities he fought so hard for.
