I don't think Israel gets it. I know the U.S. doesn't get it.

Both parties expect such actions to decrease the levels of tension, hate, and violence.

It's all bullshit. Both sides are at fault.
Obviously, Hamas is at fault for their attacks on Israel, and while Israel had a right to defend itself and retaliate, their response is disproportionate.
It's reminiscent of Russia's response to Georgia over South Ossetia.

Latuff's stuff has been absent here for a bit. He is a trifle clunky, tho' obviously full of moral outrage. I can't see too much humour in the Israeli-Palestinian situation either.
I suppose some Israelis look on such military excursions against an essentially unarmed population much like the Eskimos look on seal-clubbing: others, I'm sure, aren't quite so sanguine. Be that as it may, while the US supports Israel right or wrong, the situation ain't gonna change.
The plucky Palestinian underdog in this conflict is rather hamstrung: however just his cause, possession is nine-tenths of the law, as the various aboriginal poeples across the world have found to their cost.
Whether the quest for a 'Greater Israel' has actually stopped, is a matter for conjecture. New settlements do have a habit of suddenly appearing from nowhere almost overnight.

Ah well, lebensraum.

Self-Inflicted Wounds

LaTuff...what a fucker.

No mention of the thousands of missiles raining down on Israel for years. No mention of them using human shields.

You know what gets me about Gaza is the fact that these people ELECTED Hamas to lead their nation/territory. They chose these guys to represent them and to make the decisions necessary to protect and serve the people. But they knew at the time that Hamas was aggressive toward Israel and their policy was to provoke something like this.

So, it's hard for me to have sympathy for the "innocent" civilians that are being hurt in this conflict. They asked Hamas to lead them. They allowed Hamas to provoke this. They voted for the fucking asshole who fires mortars from the top of their apartment building.

Now don't get me wrong. I know there are innocents. I know that not everyone voted for Hamas. I know there are a lot of children being killed and maimed. And it all breaks my heart. But I really can't blame Israel. It's clear they are doing quite a lot to try to minimize collateral damage.

You know, if I posted some political cartoon showing Palestinians to be clawed, flesh-eating demons whose word express joy and pleasure at the death of innocents, I'm pretty sure I'd be universally dismissed by this community. Why would you think that displaying Rice in that manner has any kind of real element of criticism. Regardless of your interest in this conflict, neither side takes JOY in what's going on.

Cartoons like that are designed to create artificial negative sentiment. The last thing we should be doing at times like this is drawing curly mustaches on the images of our enemies.

not to forget that the citizens of gaza voted by majority for hamas as their government over more moderate alternatives. israels response can't come as a surprise to gazas inhabitants which limits my compassion for them.

Like most of the reasonable people here, I consider civilian Palestinians to be hapless victims in all this, except for the fact that in a perfect world, some of them, for God's sake, SOMEBODY among the group of people there who have bloody well had enough of the fighting, ought to be able to catch hold of 1 or 2 or 3 of these jackasses with missiles and sit on them until the authorities arrive. If the Palestinian people are fed up enough and tired of being ahem, hapless victims, they should stand up and stop the violence themselves. From within their republic.

The IDF, with all their funding, cannot seem to get the right people. I think its asking a lot of people living in refugee camps.

Plus, you'd be handing over the people who fight back to those who are keeping you down. How long are finks lasting in American jails?

Anyway, I think that its unreasonable expectation.

I heard a radio interview the other day with an Israeli peacenik and an Hamas supporter (sorry, I missed thier names and backgrounds). The interviewer asked if there were any Palestinian peaceniks along the same lines as the Israeli ones and the only response he got was something like, certainly, many Palestinians oppose the Israeli attacks, too. Perhaps the woman interviewed misunderstood the question or was merely ignorant but does anyone know whether there is any organized anti-war movement among Palestinians and their supporters?
