Snowden revealed that the NSA was spying on US citizens, which had been common knowledge since 2006 and legal since 2007. Then he went on to compromise national security in dozens of ways. Manning revealed a video of unarmed adults and aid workers being gleefully shot by a helicopter crew.

Yup. That's apples and oranges a bit. Manning's idealism was a lot better documented with the Adrian Lamo transcripts. Snowden seems like a psyop in contrast. Where is my tinfoil hat?

It was going on long before 2007. And its legality remains dubious.

It was common knowledge at least as far back as 2000. Of course, then it was dismissed as a crackpot conspiracy theory by the same people who are now dismissing it because it was common knowledge.

And no, the legality is still very much in question. Even if you accept the legitimacy of the laws that were written after the fact to legalize what the NSA had been doing for years... we're now learning that they're not even complying with those laws.

I would literally kill to have Snowden or Manning running this country.
