As a former subway rider I have this to say: Quit putting your bags on empty seats! Your damn bag isn't tired and needs to sit down, I do.

[identity profile] beyondfake-0.livejournal.com 2014-05-16 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But it was 200$ and there's no way I am getting stains on it by setting it on the floor. Close your legs, then there will be room for my bag and then we can all be happy.

I haven't looked at the male one, but the female one is petty. Taking up two seats is fine if there isn't one at need. Women often offer a seat and often prefer to stand. And expecting someone to put food on the ground is odd.

The ones who are bad are teenagers. Especially tough guys - young males. Sometimes you can shame them into offering a seat to an elder, but that can also get your teeth knocked out. I know someone who got their jaw broke for brushing against a dudes leg in the aisle. The driver didn't do anything about it either.

I'd quite like to see a study on this with some quantitative data. These photos are both are just cherry-picked anecdotal data.

I do get annoyed when people use up multiple seats when a train is busy, and it is annoying if someone takes up an unnecessary amount of space if you have people sat next to you. I can imagine men are more likely to do the latter, but I've never noticed a gender split with the former.

Being an asshole on the subway is gendered now? That's all kinds of special.

Subway leg spreaders are worse than Hitler.

I am about 75% serious about that.

For one thing, subway leg spreaders did not die most of a century ago.

"They are taught to take up a lot of space..."

Oh?

[identity profile] yes-justice.livejournal.com 2014-05-15 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well teenage boys did this in my school anyway, especially around each other. Fights would break out if you tried to climb up the steps over someone's leg too close and such. Very dumb petty stuff. Like wolves nipping at den territory.

[identity profile] wight1984.livejournal.com 2014-05-15 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true that there are gender norms about sitting with your legs apart.

I can also believe it's true that personal space is more guarded amongst men. Both male-male and male-female touch is quite fraught socially, whilst female-female touch seems to be relatively relaxed.

So, all in all, the idea that 'men take up more space' seems true to the extent of 'sitting with your legs further apart', various body posture issues and perhaps spreading themselves more evenly across a room.

However, trying to claim more than one seat on a train is something that both sexes definitely do. The trick of sitting on an outside seat or putting your bag on a seat seems to be done as much if not more by women than men.
