I have to say that to me justice means punishment. It means vindication. It is the antithesis of forgiveness. So, I always found it weird that proponents of social equality chose that instead of a warmer word.
It's complicated. They're using the meaning not in the English sense of judicial justice, but the one found in the the Hebrew word " tsedeqah" and that meant fulfilling your social responsibly to one another, and that applied equally to those in positions of political authority. That Hebrew word would often be translated into "righteousness" or "justice" or "just" in English (cf. KJV 2 Samuel 23:2= "The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.") Pope Paul VI's famous quote "If you want peace work for justice." is referring to that understanding of the word.
righteousness sounds scary too. I do understand their intended meaning. I just get this picture of the Social Justice Warriors, putting people to the sword for their disagreeable words, etc etc. Not a great picture.
Like I said, I do get the intended meaning, and its appropriate in the social way, just the word justice seems harsh to me. We will fix the world FOR GREAT JUSTICE!!!
Yeah I do realize there's other meanings for it, and especially after people started using it in the social context. It just still sounds overly aggressive to me.
And it's "mature" to accuse someone of being "butthurt?"
I could have engaged you, here, by explaining why your conception of "justice" was simply and obviously mistaken. What our other conversation made clear, however, was that not only would you not be swayed by any kind of rational discussion of the point, you would scarcely be able to even understand the things I might say to demonstrate as much. So, rather than waste my time (again) responding to you like you were an intelligent adult, I responded to you in a way that was more concise and flip. More efficient for me, more suitable for your level of competence.
Now, you can be "butthurt" about that, if you like, though I think your sanity would be better served learning to accept your cognitive limitations.
My concept of justice, as I explained to those who aren't holding a grudge, is based on my feeling about the word, though I understand their intended meaning. If you're just going to be hostile forever because omg I wouldn't see things your way, just don't talk to me anymore.
I like Cornel West. A lot. He is, by and large, great.
I cannot agree with that quote, however.
Probably because West and I would disagree over "God is love" and just what the hell is Love anyway. So I'm sorry, but I'mma have to downvote this.
What's this? No voting system. Oh shit, this isn't reddit. *runs away after leaving quote*
I love you. No sentence from a judge could be more threatening. It means that I am giving you a gift you may not want. I am making it very easy for you to injure me - if I am not making it inevitable - and in that way controlling your behavior. It means I want you as an adjunct to my life, or it means that I can survive like mistletoe or moss: only on the side of someone. It means that one way or other I intend to own you."

None of that disagrees with me.

I'm just trying to engage you at a level you'll understand.
None of that disagrees with me.
Doesn't really support your view, either, which was kind of the point I was making.
