It's funny because it's INSANE.

Wisconsin DMV Tells Boy His Bank Account Doesn’t Show Enough “Activity” To Get a Voter ID

I'm in a third world country right now, and this is seriously the same type of bullshit poor people have to go through here to vote, long lines, confusion, paying for ID cards (unless you sign up with the right party). God damn you Scott Walker.

I'm not sure if its sad or amusing to watch the US descend into banana republic status right before my eyes, but it's really something that people can come up with bullshit like this with a straight face.

Yeah well not to be that guy but at least he didn't have to pay 680 dollars for the right to vote. I've been living in this country as a legal permanent resident since I have been 3 years old (frankly I consider myself American regardless of my actual status) but because I wasn't born here I don't have the right to vote unless I go through the naturalization process. 595 dollars plus a 85 dollar biometric fee (whatever the hell that means). 680 dollars is a lot of money for a working class family, I've never found myself in a position where I'd be okay with throwing that kind of money around. At the end of the day, to be perfectly honest, I don't consider the right to vote every other year something I would value as high as 680 dollars (which is about what I was making for 2 40 hours work weeks at about 10 dollars an hour after taxes). I bet it is real easy to piss off poor working class people when you know some of them are in the same boat as I am.

It really pisses me off when I think about it too much, there are people here who can vote for free because of the particular longitude and latitude they were born on yet they don't care to or are so damned stupid enough to buy into death panels and socialism fears or think it's okay to vote who can marry who its just ugh. Fuck this shit. Anyway, all this shit is fucked up, OP included obviously, sorry for the side tracking with that rant but I felt it was sort of related.

Thank you for voicing this.

I did not know. And now I am more aware. I appreciate this awareness.

Thank you.

Always the charmers...

First question: why did they even bring bank statements if they weren't required?

Second question: why would one even need a bank account to get a voter ID?

Comment: idiot clerk!

[identity profile] american-geist.livejournal.com 2011-07-27 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think the bank statement counts as proof of residence, I could be wrong though.

In Oregon, all you need is a piece of mail with your name and current address on it. Doesn't really matter what. I think all they need is something with a postmark to prove it's been through the postal system.

[identity profile] sable-twilight.livejournal.com 2011-07-27 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the the Republican leadership feel it is important to restrict poor people from voting with a whole new series of laws.

In Oregon, you could use a bank statement too, if it has your name, current address, and postmark on it. But there's no legitimate reason for them to be looking at the statement itself, the activity and so on. The envelope should be enough.

well targeted ones, too.

Obviously what we need is BIGGER GOVERNMENT to solve this problem of big government.

Why would you suggest that? That's an odd thing to suggest.

1975 called. It wants its strawman back.
