Given the current state of the treasury, there are few things that can be done to correct it:

# raise taxes (never a good idea in a recession)
# lower spending (pfft! I'll see flying pigs before this one)
# devalue the dollar to an extent where paying the debt is easy with cheap dollars (hope you like 15$US loaves of bread)
# hope our benefactors will keep loaning us money in the prospect that the ship gets righted and they get huge returns (won't be from us, most likely our children. Thanks kids!)
