Happy Solstice to all (a llittle late)...and to all a good night!

I feel like I haven't been hearing that much about the so-called "War on Christmas this year (YAY), but I still see those stickers on people's cars a lot--the ones with a nativity scene in silhouette and the words "The Real Reason for the Season." And even though I'm not an atheist or anti-religion in general (just anti-certain specific kinds of religion), those things piss me off, because they're just plain inaccurate. The solstice was being celebrated long before Christianity even existed. Sure, Christians are celebrating because Jesus, but they're celebrating NOW because of the winter solstice!

Because nothing hurts Jesus more than failing to display pagan symbols in worship of corporate profits.

Actually celebration of Christmas on the solstice dates to the Roman Empire, after which much of Europe had already been conquered by Roman (and therefore pagan) armies.

The mad comment as an addendum to that article is worth a read too. ;)
