The sad thing? Being *nice* to people actually works. Even doing things like doing favors or giving them money... it actually *WORKS*.

You know what doesn't work? Torture.

This reminds me of a time where I was watching some documentary about soldiers in Iraq. These soldiers, to get on the good side of the local leaders, would literally bring in bags of money and give it to them.

I found it ridiculous at the time but nothing this country does anymore surprises me really.

It's almost as if there isn't some middle ground between "we must be nice to terrorists" and "we must torture everyone."

False dichotomies are a staple of US politics.

Or, it's almost as if there were a goal to interrogation other than "let's bring the pain." Something like "let's learn something new," or something like that.

I'll just say this.
Torture is immoral. If you support torture, you are an evil person. No, it does not justify the means. Torture, whether you call it 'enhanced interrogation' or not, is morally wrong. Waterboarding is morally wrong. Deliberate sensory deprivation or overstimulation, deprivation of sleep, these are all morally wrong. I do not, cannot, and will not forgive it.
