So the redskins name is actually worse since no one actually used those other names. The actual names we would have to put on the labels would mean that the cartoon wasn't publishable.

I was thinking that, too. Especially with "whiteskins" - I feel like people would shrug their shoulders and say, "okay."

OMG A LESS THAN SCIENTIFIC POLL SHOWED THAT MOST NATIVE AMERICANS DON.T CARE!! You are the racist here. It was a compliment to their bravery herp durr durr

I have Native American friends, and I asked one whether he cared, and he was all like, "Naah," so clearly the jury's still out in some quarters, so...

And it was a group of Native Americans who brought the latest suit, and add campaign. It is obvious that not all care sure, but many feel deeply about it.

(I was being facetious, if that wasn't clear.)

This would be true of any topic. Some people just don't care.

Current study that used actual standards and stuff. (http://cips.csusb.edu/docs/PressRelease.pdf)

I don't know if yellowskins and blackskins are as bad,
in that my sense is that redskins was used in the same way
that the N-word is used in the contemporary world toward blacks,
but it could be that I'm just thinking of old western movies,
which might not be a good source.

I've always thought the same thing.

I'm not sure there's an exact equivalence in terms of offensiveness between the r word and the n word, but I think redskins is probably the most offensive term for Native Americans in the English language, which makes it as close to equivalent as things can get.

Squaw is worse. That covers some pretty nasty stuff.

Actually, IIRC, there is a high school team mascot in the Dakotas called the Fighting Whitey, a guy who dresses in yuppie clothes to cheer on the team.

Turnabout is not only fair play, it's pretty damned funny.
